South Africa has around fifty (50) registered colleges and 300 registered private colleges. These colleges provide students with instruction that prepares them for employment. Programs Offered At Technical Colleges In South Africa

Technical colleges in South Africa provide a wide range of programmes in a variety of technical and career-related fields. These programmes are intended to provide students with practical skills and information that are directly useful to specific occupations in fields such as engineering, technology, commerce, healthcare, and others. Programs offered at TVET Colleges in South Africa include;

  • National Certificate (Vocational):

NC(V) programs are administered by the Department of Higher Education and Training, with quality assurance provided by Umalusi.
Students get a broad variety of knowledge and practical skills in certain industry domains as a result of the programs’ integration of theory and practice.

  • NATED / Report 191:

Under the authority of the Department of Higher Education and Training, NATED / Report 191 programs are provided and quality assured by Umalusi.
The programs last 18 months and include 18 months of academic study at colleges and 18 months of relevant practical experience in the workplace.
N1 – N6 are engineering studies, while N4 – N6 are business and utility studies.

  • National Higher Certificate:

These are Higher Education programmes offered at colleges in partnership with Higher Education Institutions.

  • Learnership:

These programmes are based on a cluster of NQF registered unit standards and are offered under the auspices of SETAs and quality assured by SETA ETQAs. Skills programmes can build up to a full qualification.

  • NQF Full Time:

National Qualifications Framework (NQF) registered qualifications offered to full-time private students under the auspices of SETAs and quality assured by SETA ETQAs

  • Non-Formal:

Enrichment programs culminate in a certificate of attendance or company-based training in response to a specific demand.

  • ABET Or AET:

Adult (basic) education and training programmes.

Admission requirements for South African technical colleges vary based on the college, programme, and level of study. However, the general requirements that prospective students should follow while applying to technical Colleges are:

National Certificate (Vocational)

  • Grade 9 + college requirements set per programme

NATED / Report 191

  • Grade 9 for N1 admission
  • Grade 12 for N4 admission

National Higher Certificate

  • Grade 12 + requirements set by HE institution and college

Learnership

  • Specific to programme

NQF Full Time

  • Specific to programme

Non Formal

  • Specific to programme

ABET Or AET

  • Specific to programme

How To Apply For Technical Colleges In South Africa

TVET Colleges, in recent times, accepts online applications for admissions. The application form is published on the official website of the colleges for prospective students to complete. Follow the steps below to apply online at Technical Colleges In South Africa;

  • Identify the TVET College of your choice
  • Download the online application form from the official website of the college
  • Complete the application form with the required information
  • Upload certified copies of your supporting documents. The following documents must be uploaded;
  1. Birth Certificate/Identity Document (Proof of application for new ID/Passport)
  2. Certificates/Qualifications
  3. Recent Academic results
  4. Municipal billing document/other account statements (not older than 3 months)
  5. A valid study permit (Foreign national students)
  6. The South African Qualification Authority’s (SAQA) Evaluation Certificate (foreign qualifications).
  • Review and submit your completed application for evaluation before the closing date.
